Hi all and welcome to the first edition of the Penalty Box. I don't think I
mentioned the money aspect when I asked for nominees. In case you have forgotten
or are new to the league the first star/goon gets $25,000, the second star/goon
gets $15,000 and the third star/goon gets $7,500. With that out of the way lets
get to the our first stars of this season.

================================================================================
1. FORWARD OF THE WEEK
#1 STAR: Eric Lindros (Crunch):
6 gls. 9 asts. 15 pts. 11 gms.
Lindros had his best game with 3 assists against the Meatheads in a Crunch 4-2
victory over the Meatheads. Lindros had the primary assists on three unanswered
third period goals by the Crunch en route to the victory.
#2 STAR: Brendan Shanahan (Pylons):
9 gls. 4 asts. 13 pts. 10 gms.
Brendan had the hat-trick in a 4-1 victory over the Ice Bolts. He had a power
play goal, an even strength goal and an empty net goal. To go along with that he
also had the game winning goal.
#3 STAR: Keith Primeau (Freeze):
5 gls. 9 asts. 14 pts. 11 gms.
Keith had 3 of his 5 goals in a 5-2 win over the Knights. He scored his 3 goals
on 6 shots with his second goal being the game winner.
Here is the up-to-date standings:
Eric Lindros (Crunch) 3 points $25,000
Brendan Shanahan (Pylons) 2 points $15,000
Keith Primeau (Freeze) 1 point $ 7,500

2. DEFENSEMAN OF THE WEEK
#1 STAR: Adrian Aucoin (Voodoo):
7 gls. 3 asts. 10 pts. 11 gms. + 9
Adrian had a big game for the Voodoo during a 4-1 win over the Hacksaws. Adrian
had 2 goals and was +3 three on the night. His first goal of the night turned
out to be the game winner.
#2 STAR: Derian Hatcher (Freeze):
0 gls. 3 asts. 3 pts. 11 gms. +10
Not noted for his offense Derian thrives on big hits and punishing play to be a
top notch defensive defenseman. In a 5-2 victory over the Knights Derian had an
assist and was a +3.
#3 STAR: Jason Woolley (Stormers):
3 gls. 8 asts. 11 pts. 11 gms. + 5
Jason was a steady performer for the Stormers over the week. He had his best
game in a 4-2 victory over the Hacksaws. He had a goal and an assist and was a
+1 in the win. His power play goal was the game winner.
Here is the up-to-date standings:
Adrian Aucoin (Voodoo) 3 points $25,000
Derian Hatcher (Freeze) 2 points $15,000
Jason Woolley (Stormers) 2 point $ 7,500

3. GOALIE OF THE WEEK
#1 STAR: Tomas Vokoun (Force):
6-1-0 1.43 GAA .954 Save % 30.9 S/GM 1 SO
Youngster Tomas Vokoun has had an incredible week capped over by an amazing
(some say drug induced) performance against the WLUHL Champion Dragons. He made
an incredible 53 saves in a Force 1-0 victory.
#2 STAR: Dominick Hasek (Dragons):
7-2-2 1.70 GAA .941 Save % 28.9 S/GM 1 SO
As if this is any surprise to anyone. Hasek has been the top goalie for who
knows how long and it looks as if he will continue that into this season.
Dominick had a great game in a 1-0 shutout victory over the Ice Bolts. Hasek
stopped 32 shots on his way to the victory and first shutout of the season.
#3 STAR: Terriers threesome (Terriers):
6-2-1 1.09 GAA .951 Save % 22.2 S/GM 3 SO
For the first time ever this paper is actually using a whole team's goalie staff
as a star. Led by Guy Hebert with two shutouts, in five games, the Terriers
goaltending threesome were nothing less than dominating. Manny Legace and Curtis
Joseph played in 4 and 2 games, respectively, with Joseph adding a shutout.
Here are the up-to-date standings:
Tomas Vokoun (Force) 3 points $25,000
Dominick Hasek (Dragons) 2 points $15,000
Terriers 3some (Terriers) 1 point $ 7,500

4. GOON OF THE WEEK
#1 GOON: Paul Laus (Freeze):
75 PIM's in 11 games 5-0-1
Like Hasek, Paul Laus is always at the top of the PIM's leaders. This year is no
different with Laus putting up an incredible 75 PIM's. Laus had his only draw
against Kryztof Oliwa (of the Hitmen) in a great scrap in which Laus got the
instigator but not the win.
#2 GOON: Rob Blake (Meatheads):
50 PIM's in 11 games 1-0-1
Blake, not noted for being a goon, is leading by example for the Meatheads.
Blake upset after the team was winless in the first seven games tried to spark
the team by beating on Chris Gratton early in the first period but to no avail.
#3 GOON: Brendan Shanahan (Pylons):
42 PIM's in 10 games 0-0-2
Being a power forward Brendan not only showed up for the forward player of the
week but is showing up on the goon of the week as well. Shanahan, like Blake,
isn't noted for being a goon but he as well leads by example. He let the team
know early in the season when 17 minutes into the first period he took on a
tough kid in Todd Simpson who he traded punches with before falling to the ice.
Here is the up-to-date standings:
Paul Laus (Freeze) 3 points $25,000
Rob Blake (Meatheads) 2 points $15,000
Brendan Shanahan (Pylons) 1 point $ 7,500

5. NEWS AND RUMOURS
CRUNCH:
=======
With all the new faces in the lineup this season the Crunch are still in the
process of gelling as a team. Lindros has made a huge impact at both ends of the
ice and Bourque has been solid. Osgood is off to a rocky start but should
settle down and play some superior hockey for the rest of the season. Yougnsters
Hossa, Arvedsson, and Savard have had a great start to this campaign and
hopefully well continue to improve for many seasons to come. Overall the Crunch
have a solid lineup and should continue to be a force to recon with for the rest
of the season and for many seasons to come. There aren't many rumours coming out
of head office but we are always looking at ways to improve the club and have
always been known to give fair market value for any player they are trying to
acquire.
MEATHEADS:
==========
Over the first 20 games there were two different meatheads teams, the one team
showed up for the first week, always a step behind, not in shape, close but not
in peak condition. The second meatheads team showed up the last week, winning 3
games and tieing one. Trading away beeser and youngser Chabot for Tugnutt
seemed to stabilize the team, or scare the rest of the squad into playing
better. It didn't bother pilon, who didn't improve his play and was moved to
the Stormers. The Meatheads are hoping
to play about .450 this season and the play of Roenick, Kariya and Tverdovsky
have improved, although the play of Coffey, Kevin Miller and Shane Doan has been
the pits. Offseason acquisition Paul Coffey has been particulariy poor this
season, considering he started off on the Meatheads first line beside Blake, and
has been steadily moving his way back to the back of the meatheads doghouse bus.
Miller, a checker, jsut hasn't been able to do his job and needs to get his act
together after 2 seasons of continueing poor performances otherwise he will be
joining pilon in the near future.
STORMERS:
=========
The surprising Stormers went undefeated in their first ten games and have only
one loss through 11 games this season. The Stormers made a few changes at the
beginning of the season. The trade of Ray Bourque seems to be the key to the
some of the Stormers success when they received Teppo Numminen, Travis Green and
Russ Courtnall. With those three players the Stormers added depth which in turn
helps them cycle three lines instead of one and a half. They also picked up Sean
Burke, before the entry draft, for a first round pick which has been a huge deal
as Burke backstopped the Stormers in the first ten games. There have been
inquiries about Zhitnik, Numminen, Pushor and Thornton but sources close to the
Stormers say no immediate changes are expected and when/if there are Joe
Thornton will not be among them leaving. The only changes that may be made is
that the Stormers may look to trade their 1st and 2nd round draft picks to add
more depth to the team.
